Why Leaders Hate Traditional Approaches to Strategic Planning
The objective of this website is to remove some of the “shock and horror” that many organizations go through when they do strategic planning. Even brave people will go to great lengths to avoid participating in a strategic planning process.
The main reason for this aversion to strategic planning is because they have previously suffered through a very long process and all they have to show for it is a thick document packed with hundreds of initiatives that lands up on a shelf gathering dust. Even worse, some people have experienced strategic planning sessions that resulted in detailed plans that stretched on for years into the future. These detailed plans were then enforced without coming up for air from time to time to see if the action steps were still relevant. Therefore, people hate strategic planning for good reason: the process is often costly in terms of time and energy and yet does not provide any real value.
However, the absence of a strategic plan for a non-profit is even worse.
